Senegal: spa day for Lenny

We’d covered 4,000 miles in 7 weeks when Lenny started to make some new noises as well as the handbrake warning sign coming on occasionally as we’re driving.

Using good old Google translate we asked our French host Patrick if he could recommend a mechanic and the next morning Lamin arrived to have a look.

He explained that a slight oil leak from the rear axel combined with sand had made a paste that was grinding Lenny’s gears (and breaks).

Here’s Lamin having taken Lenny’s right boot off.

Mechanic Lamin seemed to know what he was doing, but we don’t speak French let alone Mechanic, so it was great to have Patrick translate into simple French & Mechanic for us.

Unfortunately we needed a new seal for the axel, which Lamin couldn’t find in the small town of Mbour, so we had to stay another day in Saly Portudal while Lamin travelled to Dakar to find the replacement part for us.

Lamin also recommended we replace the engine oil, so Lenny had a replenishing spa day.

Not too shabby a place to be stranded for a day.

Looks like Lenny is being well cared for and great you could get the repair done so quickly. You’ll be expert mechanics by the time you finish your trip.
