Senegal: Touabab Dialaw

We left the Djoudj National Park to travel to a small town on the coast, Toabab Dialaw just south of Dakar. We needed to stay the week here to try to get visas for Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria.

Donkeys, goats and huge angular cows with impressive horns (see fine, live specimen below) in various stages of decomposition, lined our route.

I was pleased when we finally overtook a truck with about 12 live goats tied to the top of a truck crying like babies. Enough to turn anyone vegetarian.

Toabab is a bit of a chi-chi, bohemian touristy place and we were staying in an arty little apartment with a pool overlooking the roaring Atlantic.

The Atlantic is so close that it had taken out the concrete steps of the place next door and we wondered how long these beachfront properties would survive.

When we were planning the trip we imagined taking regular swims in the Atlantic, and we’ve had some nice refreshing dips, but we’d seriously underestimated its power. Not only are the waves high and strong but the undertow as the waves disappear knocks you off your feet and can drag you along the sand and rocks.

These dogs are getting some relief from the midday heat by digging themselves little pits into the wet sand.

Adventurous stuff. But where’s the pic you mentioned of the cattle?
So the Atlantic is full and mighty?!!

Ah! Thanks! They are now. Clever dogs!
Is fuel much cheaper than here?

Diesel is cheaper, but not by much, it’s one of our biggest expenses.

Just been doing a catch up. It is an adventure that’s for sure! Great to see and read. Puts our little England moans and groans in to perspective. Looks like you’re having some hard earned RnR now. Enjoy and keep it coming. X ps not at all envious 😉
