Senegal: St Louis

We had a fantastic day exploring St Louis, with its complex set of rivers, islands and peninsulas.

After walking around, crossing bridges and failing to get our bearings, we took a horse and carriage ride with Usman who is a popular young guy in St Louis. Everywhere we went he had a joke or a cuss for people going about their business.

He also found time to tell us a bit about the history of St Louis and showed us some of the main sights, like this pelican which lives with and apparently thinks it is a street goat.

The pelican’s name is Michael Jackson, because when pelicans are born they’re black and as adults become white.

The green flag shows fishermen that the sea is safe today, amber means its risky and red too dangerous to go out in the big wooden pirogues.

Usman also tried to teach us some Wolof, the language spoken in most of Senegal & Gambia, of which we can only remember the word for hello, nangadeff.

Nothing like having a local showing you their area. X

Nice to see you get to the other side of the road by the pelican crossing….
