Morocco: Lixir & Merdja Zerga

We had a great stay in Asilah, a really interesting but very relaxed town.

On Christmas Day we were woken by the haunting, deep-voiced call to prayer via the speakers on this Mosque minaret.

We visited the impressive remains of a Roman town, Lixir, set on a hill overlooking the wide river Loukkos (locust), with its 400 capacity auditorium.

On Boxing Day we drove an hour or so south to Merdja Zerga (blue lagoon) and were taken by Hassan on a boat across the lagoon. Hassan explained that the lagoon is tidal, filled by sea water through a narrow inlet.

He told us about the varied fish and bird life of the lagoon, including gulls, terns, oyster catchers, plovers, coots and a large flock of flamingos which spend 3-4 winter months in the lagoon.
