Sierra Leone: the coconut guy

Our hosts at the Lungi Lodge kindly offered to take us on an afternoon trip to a remote beach.

Michael jumped into Lenny with us and we took a short drive along a sandy track.

As we walked along the beautiful beach with just a few fishermen sorting out their nets and kids playing in the waves, a young guy in a red t-shirt passed by and asked our host if we were interested in some fresh coconut.

Of course we answered yes, so he jogged back in the opposite direction.

15 minutes later we returned to where we’d parked up to find that the young guy had shimmied up a 25m coconut palm and started chucking down coconuts to the excitement of the kids below.

You might just about spot his red shirt right at the top of the tree in the middle.

He hauled himself down the tree just as quickly, which looked pretty painful and started cutting open the coconuts with his machete, surrounded by excited kids.

We gave him a small sum, drank some delicious coconut water and took a few back to the lodge with us, leaving the rest for the kids to enjoy.

On the way back Michael took us to a street car cleaning operation, to get the accumulated red dust off Lenny, which was interesting to see, but pretty uncomfortable too as some of the kids involved were as young as 7 or 8.
