Senegal: Joal Fadiouth island

Before heading on to Gambia, we visited Fadiouth island, made entirely of seashells.

Our knowledgeable guide, Jean-Baptiste was born on the island, walked us over the long bridge from Joal village on the mainland to the seashell island.

Over many centuries, ancestors have harvested clams, oysters and other shellfish and left the empty shells which have built up into 3 islands. One of these, Fadiouth is home to 6,000 people.

Senegal is about 90% Muslim, but Fadiouth is 90% Catholic. The other island is a cemetery where Christians and Muslims are buried together and the third is agricultural; featuring millet, peanuts and rice.

One of the gravestone revealed a 104 year old woman, J-B put this longevity down to the healthy seafood diet.

The first pigs we’ve seen since leaving Europe (not counting warthogs).

As you walk through the island you’re crunching through seashells. Even the bricks are mainly shells.

Impressive Catholic shrines and church.

As soon as he told us he was an Arsenal fan, we got no more information about the island, just chat about buying Arsenal defenders.
