The trip: out of Europe

We took Lenny from La Rochelle to San Sebastián in the Basque Country and stayed in the same fantastic apartment in Hernani just outside San Sebastián where we’d stayed in the trial trip, that’s how much we liked that place and Jon who really looked after us.

He told us how to get the train just 10mins into San Sebastián and what to see in this interesting city set in a huge bay with Santa Clara island in the centre. We walked the whole bay, stopping for coffees, pinchos and beers just to support the local economy.

The strong winds and heavy rain caused deaths, injuries and damage across Spain as well as France, Italy and Portugal. Rivers broke their banks and the Gran Via in Madrid was closed. We were very lucky to avoid this chaos, but had a hairy drive in high winds from San Sebastián to Salamanca in south west Spain, through the Pyrenees and a series of ridiculously long tunnels.

We spent just one night in Salamanca before heading to our final European stop, Tarifa in Andalucía.
