We drove on south towards Donastia-San Sebastián in the Basque Country, stopping off at Aires, little service station/picnic stops, though it really wasn’t picnic weather.

We were lucky enough to stay in another wonderful place in Hernani, a small town just outside Donastia-San Sebastian.

Set in a little apple orchard, just below the town, the thoughtfully designed little apartment was perfect and we were really sad we only had time to stay one night before having to start the journey back through France.
We had great little bocadillos, tortilla and ham in bread rolls in a bustling bar, saw kids playing pétanque and enjoyed using a bit of Spanish again.
I know it’s sounding like we were just having a holiday here, but we had serious tasks to achieve as well, like visiting Decathlon to get a selection of bags that we can use to easily compartmentalise stuff in the van, sleeping bag, foldable table, helium filling pillows and a little plastic folding sink.
Then we turned around and started driving north and back to Brexitlandia on the ferry out of Calais.

The trial trip had been much wetter than we hoped and we’d camped out less, but it had served its main purpose; we now feel ready to set off on the main trip in just 2 months.
