The trial trip: La Belle France

After the exertions and spartan campsites of the Lake District Explorer, we said our farewells to our offroad mates and started heading south down the M6.

We’d booked a good hotel, The Wrightington, near Wigan and were very impressed by the setting, the restaurant, the pool and spa and the lovely, friendly staff, highly recommended.

Next morning after a quick swim & breakfast we took Lenny all the way south to Dover. We drove him onto the ferry and endured a pretty rough and blustery crossing with mainly long distance lorry drivers onboard.

Lenny first in the queue to get onto the ferry, with the white cliffs of Dover backdrop.

Remembering to drive on the right, but somehow getting into the lorry lane on the way out of the port, we arrived at the Baie de Wissant hotel, just 30mins later. Another great hotel, on the beach with a sauna and delicious breakfast, including Sable de Wissant cheese.

After a refreshing walk along the beach and through the little town of Wissant we jumped back into Lenny and we’re back in the road heading south to Nantes.

Lenny sure is thirsty, and we started doing the calculations for how much we’re going to have to budget for diesel for our trip (and that’s without the cost to the planet).

We drove through some pretty wet and blustery motorways to arrive late in the campsite and had a full night of gusty winds and heavy rain so didn’t feel too refreshed the next morning and setting up and taking down the roof tent in the wet and dark was tricky.

Our cold, wet & dark pitch for the night.

So we scanned the map of France and northern Spain for somewhere we could dry out, but it seemed the rain clouds were set across the whole area.

We set off early and as is our mission, headed due south towards the Spanish border.
